Air Canada says some passengers are being taken to hospital in Calgary after a flight from Shanghai to Toronto encountered turbulence and was forced to land.

The airline issued a statement confirming, “there were some injuries due to turbulence requiring hospitalization for assessment.” It did not say how many were hurt.

Up to 20 people may have suffered neck and back injuries, a spokesperson for the Calgary Fire Department told The Canadian Press earlier Wednesday.

Flight AC88 was travelling from Shanghai’s Pudong International airport to Toronto Pearson International Airport and was scheduled to land at 6:45 p.m. EST.

The flight touched down in Calgary at 3:23 p.m. local time instead.

Initial information suggests the Boeing 777-300ER was carrying 332 passengers and 19 crew members, according to Air Canada.

At least six people were taken out of the airport on stretchers, according to CTV Calgary reporter Rahim Ladhani.
