Aretha Franklin’s surprise appearance at the 38th Annual Kennedy Center Honors, which aired Tuesday night on CBS, left even President Barack Obama in tears. This year’s ceremony honoured Carole King, George Lucas, Rita Moreno, Seiji Ozawa and Cicely Tyson.
But it was Franklin who stole the show, singing her 1967 single “(You Make Me Feel Like) a Natural Woman,” and dedicating the performance to co-writer Carole King, who received an award for her contribution to music.
Majestic as always, Franklin blew kisses in the air while sporting a full-length fur coat and glimmering earrings, sparkling clutch in hand.
While Obama shed a tear alongside wife Michelle, King was shocked by the appearance and, along with the rest of the audience, visibly moved.
