Facebook glitch shows users as friends for 46 years

Spotted your friends posting about a flaw on Facebook this morning?

A glitch in the social platform’s ‘See Your Memories’ tool on Thursday began showing perplexed users as ‘friends on Facebook’ for 46 years – a full 34 years before the social network was invented, and about two decades before the World Wide Web.

In many cases, the bug displayed two people as friends for longer than their own lifetime.

According to Microsoft developer Mark Davis, the problem is likely caused by a malfunction in the Unix system, an operating system that allows a computer to function.

Davis’ explanation seems to make sense, as the first date in the Unix system is Dec. 31, 1969 – exactly 46 years ago.

A Facebook spokesperson told Mashable that the glitch is being fixed: “We’ve identified this bug and the team’s fixing it now so everyone can ring in 2016 feeling young again.”

Siblings Dennis and Juliette Hall awoke to find Facebook claiming they had been friends on the social network for 46 years, close to 20 years older than either of them.
