Montreal overpasses demolished, rebuilt, demolished once more

    The demolition of a brand new overpass on Highway 15 in Verdun was making headlines at several media outlets on Wednesday, but the problem was first flagged by an alert reader who submitted a question to the Montreal Gazette’s Squeaky Wheels column.

    Brossard resident Nadeem Ahmed noticed that two renovated overpasses, and one that was constructed about a year ago, were demolished, and submitted a question to the weekly column on commuting around Montreal. The column quoted a spokesperson for the Signature on the St. Lawrence, who explained that the overpasses in question had to be demolished because they did not fit in with the planned road network around the new Champlain Bridge.

    The overpass in question was demolished in 2014 and rebuilt the following year. It was demolished again in August to make way for the new road network.

    “While the overpass was recently rebuilt, it no longer met the project’s technical requirements and did not fit in with the new highway leading to the new Champlain Bridge,” the SSL wrote on its website. “Once demolished, the overpass will be rebuilt in accordance with the new roadway geometry, which had to be changed to accommodate the widening of Highway 15 and construction of the new Nuns’ Island Bridge.”

    The road network in that sector is being realigned and Gaétan Laberge Blvd. is being renovated to improve the link between Verdun and downtown. Highway 15 in that sector will be widened to six lanes from four. The project is set to be completed by 2019

    The overpass isn’t the only new structure being demolished as part of the Champlain Bridge project. A new Nuns’ Island bridge, completed last year at the cost of $100 million, will also be demolished when a new structure is built by 2019.

    The federal corporation Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Inc. elected to build a bridge in a temporary location, because it was looking at spending nearly the same amount to maintain the bridge, which would probably have been torn down anyway to fit in with the new project.
