Airdrie RCMP have received numerous reports and 911 calls in recent weeks involving suspicious people dressed up as clowns.

Officials said in each case someone was seen wearing a clown-like costume or mask, but they do not believe the incidents are related.

No charges have been laid in any of those cases yet, but RCMP said they are still investigating.

“Although it is not illegal to dress up in any type of costume when done in good fun, it is illegal to harass and intimidate the public,” RCMP said in a news release Tuesday. “Depending on the severity and particulars of the situation, RCMP will be considering Criminal Code charges including mischief, causing a disturbance or uttering threats.”

The news comes following a rash of creepy clown sightings in the United States and a couple of incidents in Alberta.

In preparation for Halloween, RCMP said Airdrie residents should walk in groups, carry cell phones and stay in well-lit areas. People are also asked to report any suspicious activity to police.
