It’s an impressive accomplishment for Mikhail Sergachev to make the Canadiens as an 18-year-old defenceman. It’s even more impressive when you consider the fact he didn’t start playing hockey until he was 9.

As a youngster growing up in Nizhnekamsk, Russia, Sergachev had no interest in hockey and was a swimmer. That changed when he was 9 and the father of a girl in his class at school coached a hockey team. The father noticed Sergachev was a big kid and suggested he try playing hockey.
