West Edmonton street shut down, building evacuated after truck breaks cable

Edmonton police closed 184 Street and evacuated a building on Stony Plain Road Tuesday afternoon after a crash believed to involve a stolen truck.

The EPS said 184 Street was closed north and south between Stony Plain Road and 104 Avenue.

Officers were called to the scene at around 2:40 p.m. and said the road would be shut down for several hours.

Police believe a stolen semi-truck collided with another vehicle, entered a parking lot and then hit a cable, breaking it from its tower.

The woman driving the vehicle that was hit was taken to hospital as a precaution, EPS said.

Officers said the man driving the allegedly stolen truck tried to drive away in a blue Pontiac Grand Am that was stolen from the parking lot.

Buildings in the area, including CTV Edmonton, were evacuated due to risk of the tower collapsing.
