The suspense is over. The Montreal dance world now sees which direction Les Grands Ballets Canadiens’ new artistic director Ivan Cavallari will take Quebec’s biggest dance company. On Wednesday, Cavallari unveiled his picks for the 2017-2018 season, his first at the helm. On the surface, he’s steering toward European contemporary ballet in much the same direction that his predecessor, Gradimir Pankov, took during the past 16 years.
The late German choreographer Uwe Scholz and the American-born German-based choreographer Bridget Breiner got to know Cavallari when all three were working at Stuttgart Ballet. Indeed, Cavallari was there in 1991 when Scholz created Seventh Symphony, set to Beethoven’s music, a work that Cavallari has programmed in a double bill with Edward Clug’s Stabat Mater to open Les Grands’ fall season on Oct. 11.
