Snowy, rainy and relatively warm.

Montreal got more rain and snow than usual in the fall and winter, and temperatures have been above average.

That means forecasters were only partly right when they made their predictions last fall. The Weather Network and Environment Canada had predicted a snowy winter with average or below-average temperatures.

Monday may be the first day of spring but in Montreal snow normally falls between October and April.

Here’s a look at what Mother Nature delivered during the fall and winter of 2016-17. The figures cover Oct. 1 to March 17, as compiled by Environment Canada.

Snow

On average, Montreal gets 210 centimetres of snow.

So far, the total snowfall has reached 218 cm. That’s 49 cm more than fell between October and April in 2015-16.

December was the snowiest month, with 64 cm, 15 cm more than average.

The biggest snowstorm occurred March 14-15, when 39 cm fell.

Over a six-day stretch in February, 43 cm fell, including 23 cm on one day.

Montreal usually gets about 13 cm of snow in April.

Last year, Environment Canada recorded a trace of snow on May 16.

Temperature

The average low temperature in Montreal between Oct. 1 and March 17 was 3 degrees Celsius. During the same period in 2015-16, the average was minus-4 C.

During December, January and February, the average low temperature was minus-8 C, when the average is normally minus-9 C, minus-14 C and minus-12 C, respectively.

But March has so far been colder than usual.

The average low temperature has been minus-11 C. That’s four degrees warmer than the average for March.

Montreal normally gets 350 mm of rain between October and April.

In 2016-17, so far, 376 mm have fallen. In October, Montreal received 74 mm more than usual. February was also above average – by 29 mm.
