Transport Canada proposes guidelines for seatbelts on school buses

Transport Canada is proposing new guidelines for Canadian bus operators who want to install seatbelts on their buses.

Currently, school buses aren’t required to have seatbelts installed. Transport Canada says without requirements for seatbelts, there is no way to ensure that buses that have seatbelts have installed them safely.

The last child fatality aboard a Canadian school bus was in 2008. Transport Canada suggests guidelines would improve safety for children involved in crashes or rollovers.

The agency is looking at over-the-shoulder belts rather than lap-only seat belts.

Would you like to see seatbelts installed on school buses? Would you feel more comfortable knowing your child was buckled up?
