Before marijuana is legalized, the Quebec government needs to seriously considers implementing a minimum legal age of 21 to purchase pot, says the Association des spécialistes en médecine d’urgence du Québec, ASMUQ.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the association said that everyday, people are brought to Quebec emergency rooms with marijuana-induced psychosis. They have also noted increases in asthma and hyperemesis, a severe form of nausea and vomiting.
This request is similar to one made by the Association des médecins psychiatres du Québec on June 5. They want a minimum age of 21, but also called for the prohibition of marijuana advertising. They also call for a maximum dosage of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), with the amount listed on the packaging.
The emergency medical specialists also ask that preventive tools and educational programs about the risks of weed be implemented, alongside funding for resources to treat illnesses related to cannabis consomption.
