The scholarship will be offered in the name of the provincially renowned educator and former basketball star who died on June 2, 2017.

Smith died at the age of 50 following a brief battle with stomach cancer.

The donation of $50,000 came from the Jeanine Deveau Education Equity Endowment and will establish the Wade Smith Memorial Scholarship for African Nova Scotia Youth.

“He would be pleased to know his name will continue to provide post-secondary education opportunities for young students from his community,” said Augy Jones, who played alongside Smith on the X-Men basketball team.

Smith was principal of Citadel High School, a former star of the X-Men basketball team, and had spent 26 years as a staff member of the university’s basketball camp.
