The estranged husband of a woman who died in a fatal collision on Highway 3 this week blamed the man she was seeing for the crash.

Danielle Charlton, who friends and family called Deedee, died in a crash just outside of Hope on Monday afternoon.

Police have yet to identify the suspect who fled after the collision.

According to RCMP, an SUV was believed to be travelling southbound before it collided with a truck. Charlton, who was a passenger in the SUV, died as a result of the crash.

As bystanders tried to save the 35-year-old mother of four, the person driving the SUV allegedly stole a vehicle belonging to a Good Samaritan who had stopped to help and fled the scene.

“Actions speak louder than words. His actions are the actions of a coward,” husband Charlie Charlton said.

Police haven’t identified the suspect. But Charlton’s family said it was a man she had been seeing on and off for the past year, someone who they say dragged her back into a life of homelessness and drugs.

They say the man left her injured at a motorcycle crash scene one month ago.

“She broke her pelvis and he left her there,” Charlie said. “He was worried about getting away”

This family remembers Charlton as an artist, wife and mother who was tragically torn between two lives.

“She apologized for all the stuff she put us through,” Charlie said, fighting through tears.

Charlton said the family hoped Danielle would overcome her troubles and find a way back into their lives.

They’re now left to wonder what could have been.

“The life of her drained out onto that road,” Charlie said. “She didn’t deserve to die alone, I know that.”
