Types of Attic Insulation
The attic is one of the most important — and overlooked — areas in your home. Insulation in this space plays a key role in keeping your home at a comfortable temperature and reducing energy bills. It also helps prevent damage to your roof from leaks and rodents.
In many cases, Insulation Contractor rebates can make this upgrade even more affordable. However, it’s important to consider how much work you want to take on, and the varying degrees of skill required for different insulation types, before making your decision.
Blanket Insulation
Commonly referred to as blanket or batt insulation, fiberglass is the most popular choice for DIYers. This pre-cut material comes in various widths and thicknesses, with or without a paper facing, and is installed by rolling it onto the attic floor. It works best in attics with standard joist spacing, few obstacles to work around, and sufficient headroom for maneuvering. Fiberglass can be susceptible to moisture and is a favorite snack of raccoons. It can be made more moisture-resistant by adding a vapor barrier.
Spray Foam Insulation
This two-part liquid expands upon application, filling gaps and cracks to create an airtight seal. Available in open- and closed-cell versions, it’s ideal for addressing complex attic spaces, hard-to-reach corners and crevices, and provides a high R-value per inch. Closed-cell foam is more moisture resistant than open-cell foam and is also a good attic vapor barrier.
